The Department for Employment and Learning here has this week (‘Adult Learners Week’) announced that, as from 1st August 2010, all entry level ICT classes in the regional colleges will be free of charge.
This is in support of DEL’s Essential Skills strategy, as ICT became the third Essential Skill in 2009. The others are literacy and numeracy.
Minister Sir Reg Empey, in launching the initiative said: “The need to equip our people with ICT skills is central to my Department’s drive towards building a cutting-edge workforce for Northern Ireland. In today’s employment market, very few jobs remain that are untouched by technology. It is for this reason that computer literacy has become as important as reading and writing to employer and employee alike.”
